Writing Workshop with Laura Pritchett

Author Laura Pritchett will be hosting a writing workshop and an author talk at the Library.
  • Writing Workshop: Love the Outdoors? Write It, 5:30 to 6:30 pm
  • We Coloradoans love the outdoors – camping, hiking, burning our feet on the great Sand Dunes. Feeling deeply connected to places often warrants expression; many nature-lovers seek a way to communicate their ideas/bonds/hopes to a larger audience.
  • However, there’s a real trick in rendering place – connecting the “external landscape” of the world to the “internal landscape” of you or your characters.
  • In this workshop, we’ll be looking at what contemporary nature writers are doing, how they’re doing it, and to what effect—and applying it to your work.
  • Appropriate for all genres and levels.
  • Laura Pritchett is the author of nine books and one play. She began her writing journey with the short story collection Hell’s Bottom, Colorado, which won the PEN USA Award for Fiction and the Milkweed National Fiction Prize. This was followed by the novels Sky Bridge, Stars Go Blue, and Red Lightning, and The Blue Hour, which garnered other writing awards.
  • She’s also editor of three anthologies and author of two nonfiction books: Great Colorado Bear Stories and Making Friends with Death: A Guide to Your Impending Last Breath.
  • Her first play was recently produced in Fort Collins. Her work has appeared in The New York Times, O Magazine, Salon, High Country News, The Sun, Brain, Child, and many others.
  • She holds a PhD from Purdue University and teaches around the country. Learn more on her website.
  • Registration is required for both parts of the evening with Laura Pritchett.  You may register for one or both, but each part requires a separate registration. No email address?  Call (303) 651-8472 to register.

Also, don't miss!

  • Author Talk: The Journey of a Writer, 7 to 8 pm
  • Laura Pritchett has pursued her life’s dream for 25 years—writing novels about the people of her native Colorado. She wrote in her first diary: “I want to be a riter [sic] someday,” and she did (after a lot of ups and downs, twists and turns). Come hear about the path of a novelist, essayist, and lover of the natural world.
  • Whether you love her fiction, nonfiction, or magazine writing (or are new to it!), come hear what this PEN-USA and Colorado Book Award-winning author has to say about literature, books, and the West.
  • Books will be for sale.
  • Unable to attend?  This program may be livestreamed on the Longmont Observer Facebook page, and recorded and posted on our Watch Recent Programs page.
