New Year Brings New Services to Library Patrons

Library expands opportunities to learn, be entertained, and be helped

Post Date:01/03/2019

Beginning today, patrons of the Longmont Public Library will have a lot more options to learn, be entertained, and get assistance than they did last year, as the Library expands its online offerings and launches a new assistance program.

With the Great Courses, library patrons can learn about everything from economics to fine art to travel.

After a very successful pilot program in August, the Library is adding the most popular online classes available through The Great Courses to its already extensive selection of free materials by The Great Courses. With the new streaming service, patrons can study a broad variety of subjects taught by some of the most outstanding scholars in each field. A complete class list is available on the Library’s website.  Patrons must have a WiFi or internet connection and a free RB Digital account to access this service, and classes are not available to download and watch at a later time.

Watch the best in British movies and tv shows with Acorn TV streaming service from RBdigital.

Also from RB Digital is the new Acorn TV service, an online streaming entertainment service featuring the best in television and films from Great Britain and beyond. The service includes over 80 exclusive shows with thousands of hours of commercial-free programming, including world-class mysteries, dramas, and comedies, as well as Acorn TV originals.  New shows are added weekly, and patrons need only have a library card, a WiFi or internet connection, and a free RB Digital account to start watching on any digital device, such as phones, tablets, laptops, and smart televisions.

Learning a language just got better at the Library with the Pronunciator online language learning service.

For those who have learning another language on their New Year’s Resolutions List, the Library has great news:  Pronunciator is here to make language learning more successful and more fun.  Pronunciator offers more than 80 languages, with more added each year, and allows for learning on the go with the Pronunciator app. The service includes teacher-led conversation classes, streamable and downloadable audio lessons, as well as intensive, deep dive, multi-week, structured courses. Also, Pronunciator is great for students of all ages – from toddlers up – and keeps language learning engaging by incorporating feature films and songs. For those students dedicated to learning English, Pronunciator has ESL courses taught in 55 non-English languages, and it also includes ProCitizen courses, specifically designed for U.S. immigrants to succeed at the Naturalization Test. Pronunciator is free with a library card and easy to get started.

Patrons can make appointments for one-on-one help from librarians.

Finally, as part of an ongoing commitment to personalizing the library experience, the new “Book a Librarian” service provides patrons the option of scheduling one-on-one assistance from a professional librarian. Librarians can help with all sorts of questions, including downloading and accessing electronic or audio books, conducting research using the Library’s various resources, helping with a library account, and suggesting books based on a reader’s personal interests and tastes. The new service is open to all adults, appointments are made for up to 30 minutes, and help in Spanish is also available. Book a Librarian appointments can be made online or in person at the 2nd Floor Information Desk.

All of these services are free with a library card, and all can be accessed online at the links in the text. So get started now, and make 2019 a year of learning and fun!
