Author and Veterinarian Visits the Library to Share Stories from her Memoir

Ivy the Therapy dog to also attend and offer free tail wags

Post Date:04/16/2019

Author and veterinarian Mary Carlson comes to the library for a night of stories.

With humor, wit, and heart, Mary Carlson tells of great losses and greater love that come with life in her memoir Drinking from the Trough and her program at the Longmont Public Library on Thursday, May 16, from 7 to 8pm. Winner of two Beverly Hills Book Awards with this debut title, Mary didn't start out to become a veterinarian, let alone the owner and caretaker of cats (many), dogs (two, both huskies), and horses (some with manners, some without) in Colorado.

Weaving "people stories" with "animal stories," Mary follows her journey from student to veterinarian, wife, pet parent, and friend. After working 100+ hours a week teaching and serving on the school board--not to mention recovering from a hip shattered in a horse riding accident--all while running the clinic, and grieving the death of a loved one, she decided to close her practice. With perseverance and single-minded determination, along with the love, challenges, and adventures of animals and people in her life, Mary shows how anyone can survive life's upheavals. Her wisdom in the face of hardship shows readers how to tackle the tough things in life, love deeply, and pursue their dreams, especially when those dreams change.

Mary Carlson , DVM, MA, CVA has been a physical education and science teacher, a community volunteer and school board member, a lecturer in Anatomy at the Colorado State University College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, a guest researcher studying Yersinia pestis (plague) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and a veterinarian with a feline-exclusive practice. She is internationally certified in animal acupuncture. She is also a rabid Chicago Cubs fan, an avid horsewoman, an enthusiastic dog owner, and, according to her cats, excellent support staff. She lives in Fort Collins, Colorado, and Tucson, Arizona.

Registration is required and can be completed online.  No email address? Call 303-651-8472.
