Mayor’s Book Club to Record Television Segments at the Library
Families with preschoolers invited to attend special storytimes with Mayor Bagley
Attention Longmont preschoolers: get ready for your close-ups! Mayor Brian Bagley is bringing his Mayor’s Book Club storytime to the Library on four dates between now and October, and families with young children are invited to attend. Because the storytimes also air on local public access television Channel 8, a film crew will bring a little taste of Hollywood to a corner of the Children’s section of the Library on Thursdays, April 18, June 20, August 15, and October 17, from 11 to 11:30 am. Grab the kids and offer up their 15 minutes of “fame” with a great storytime to boot!
The Mayor's Book Club is a free monthly reading program for 3- and 4-year-old children; participating children receive a new book each month until they turn 5. Established in 2007, the Mayor’s Book Club aims to not only help 3- and 4-year-olds develop a love for reading and learning at an early age, but to create a level playing field for all of our youngest learners. The “achievement gap” in Longmont, or the disparity in key academic scores, generally falls along socioeconomic and ethnic lines. This program, sponsored by the City of Longmont, Division of Children, Youth and Families, and Bright EYES, is open to all 3- and 4-year-olds in Longmont, but in an effort to close the achievement gap before kindergarten, program leaders make a special effort to recruit families who are lower income and newer immigrants. However, all families with young children are invited and encouraged to attend the storytime tapings.
So join Mayor Bagley at the Library as he reads the books from the book club and gets to meet some of our youngest community members. Children of all ages may attend the recording and no registration is required.
