Composer and Author Explores the World through Language, Rhythm, and Percussion

Michael Udow brings unique program to the Longmont Public Library.

Post Date:11/05/2019 3:19 PM

Michael Udow explores the world through language, rhythm and percussion.

As the great actor John Cleese said: “And now for something completely different...”

On Thursday, December 5, composer and author Michael Udow will bring his category-defying program to the Longmont Public Library from 7 to 8:30 pm.  Udow will carry his audience on a whirlwind journey combining fun, easy, hands-on examples that relate poetry, math, geography, science and cultural awareness to one another while drawing on concepts presented in his new book, Percussion Pedagogy. Video examples of music from around the world and videos of Michael working with young aspiring musicians are included in his program.

Udow retired after heading the percussion program at the University of Michigan for twenty-nine years and serving as principal percussionist at The Santa Fe Opera from 1968 – 2009. He draws on his decades of performances, clinics and residencies in North America after dozens of trips to Japan with multiple appearances in China, Korea, and Europe. Udow refers to his “retirement” as “reassignment,” composing operas, symphonies and chamber music. His compositions have been performed by the Boulder Philharmonic Orchestra, Colorado Chamber Orchestra, Rhode Island Philharmonic, Richmond Symphony and Madison Philharmonia.

The Library invites you to come and enjoy a low-key/non-judgmental/group participatory evening. This program is for adults and older teens and will likely be of special interest to music teachers and school teachers.

Registration is required and can be accomplished online.
