This Week in Longmont - November 1, 2019
Longmont’s annual Día de los Muertos Family Celebration is a time to honor and celebrate deceased loved ones and the largest Day of the Dead celebration in Colorado. Enjoy live music and dancing, sugar-skull decorating, traditional food, altars, crafts, Catrina face painting, and more from 2 to 6 pm on Saturday, November 2, at 4th Avenue and Kimbark Street. Park downtown or take the free shuttle from the Longmont Museum at 400 Quail Road so you can see the exhibit, too. Stay for the gigantes (traditional giant puppets) procession and Catrina Ball, both held after the Family Fiesta downtown.
Shred Your Private Documents for Free
Take boxed or bagged papers to be shredded to the Waste Diversion Center at 140 Martin Street between 9 am and 2 pm on Saturday, November 2. This is for residential documents only; no business documents accepted. Please also take ID and a copy of your most recent Longmont utility bill. Fall Leaf Collection Rescheduled for Some
The City of Longmont’s Waste Services Division is rescheduling Fall Leaf Collection services for Monday and Tuesday trash collection areas. Wednesday and Thursday leaf collection schedules remain the same. Visit bit.ly/rescheduled-fall-leaves-2019 for updated schedules and more information.
Bilingual Storytime Returns to the Library
The Library’s popular Cuentos Bilingües/Bilingual Storytime returns from 11 to 11:30 am on Thursday, November 7. This fun, all-ages storytime features stories and songs in Spanish and English. It will be held weekly in the Children’s Craft Room at the Library, 409 4th Avenue, and no registration is required.
Don’t Miss Turkey Trot Early Registration
Gobble, gobble, gobble, GO! Join the crowd at 9 am on Saturday, November 9, at Altona Middle School, 4600 Clover Basin Drive, for the Photo Finish edition of the annual Longmont Turkey Trot. Run or walk a scenic 2-mile or 10K course, including a wheelchair division. Early registration ends at noon on Thursday, November 7. Holiday Open House & Winter Passport Launch
Downtown Longmont kicks off the holiday shopping season from 6 to 9 pm on Friday, November 8. More than 40 businesses will host Holiday Open Houses as part of 2nd Friday festivities to give shoppers a head start on this year’s short holiday shopping season. November 8 also marks the launch of the 2019 Winter Passport program. Almost 60 participating businesses will begin handing out Shop LoCo stickers to customers who can then enter to win over $1,000 in prizes. Find more information at DowntownLongmont.com.
Hear Renowned Doctor on Healing Trauma
From 6 to 9 pm on Monday, November 11, renowned neuroscientist and author Dr. Bruce Perry will speak about traumatized children and adults and their need for a healthy community to buffer pain, distress and loss caused by earlier trauma. In this presentation at Vance Brand Auditorium, 600 E. Mountain View Avenue, Perry will provide specific ideas on what each of us can do to be part of building a healthy community. Longmont city government observes the Veterans Day holiday on Monday, November 11. All City facilities will be CLOSED except the Longmont Recreation Center, the St. Vrain Memorial Building, Centennial Pool and the Ice Pavilion, which will be open regular hours. Trash, recycling and composting will be collected one day later than usual through the week.
