NextLight is Colorado’s first Gig City, able to deliver symmetrical gigabit internet to homes and businesses citywide, without data caps to limit the experience. Because Longmont is a constantly growing community, there are always new areas for the fiber-optic network to expand to. If your area is experiencing NextLight’s construction process for the first time, here are some of the basics. 

NextLight Construction Process

Network construction includes the installation of underground and overhead infrastructure (fiber, conduits, and network equipment) required for the citywide fiber-optic system. NextLight was constructed using a “design-build” process, allowing sections of the network to be designed and built as the project went on, so that we could easily adapt to changing conditions.

Customer pre-installation is the outside work, sometimes referred to as the “customer drop,” where we install underground and overhead fiber infrastructure from the network to individual homes and businesses.  Installation construction will occur in rights-of-ways, easements, and on residential and business properties for those customers who sign up for service. LPC will use the most appropriate and effective methods available to minimize the impact to its customers and manage costs.

Customer installation is the final piece in the process, the inside work that brings NextLight service directly to you. Our crews run a fiber-optic line into your home or business, straight to the fiber modem we provide, known as an Optical Network Terminal or ONT. By never handing off to a coaxial cable or copper phone line, we can ensure the fastest possible connection to your location.

Crews installing NextLight service may sometimes lay a fiber cable on the ground instead of immediately burying it, due to ground conditions or to meet the high customer demand for installations. This is a temporary measure; the fiber cables are harmless to people and pets, but should not be disturbed. Once conditions allow, we will contact you and return to bury the line.

“Does my apartment have NextLight yet?”

If you live in an apartment building or other multi-dwelling unit (MDU), then we need the approval of your property management before we can bring NextLight to you and your neighbors. Once we have an access agreement with your MDU or HOA, we can then begin the construction process. If you are unsure if service is available to you, please call us at (303) 651-8386 or complete our online interest form and one of our Customer Service Representatives will reach out to you.

Please note that we reach out to every MDU, HOA, and management company as construction progresses through Longmont. However, if your MDU doesn't have NextLight yet, then it’s time to talk to your landlord or property manager. Show them our Three Quick Steps to getting NextLight and encourage them to call us at (303) 651-8386. We’ll be glad to hear from them!

Reminder: Soak Your Sod!

Our NextLight crews will often put new sod in an area to restore the landscape after construction. But that beautiful sod can become a strip of brown if it gets too thirsty! Please remember:

  • Give your new sod plenty of water for at least 10 days, so that the grass can establish itself.
  • Water your sod at least three times a day. This is especially important during a hot Colorado summer!

Identifying crews

In areas where NextLight work is going on, you may see individuals in safety vests walking down streets and through alleys as they inspect existing overhead and underground infrastructure in the area. You may also see workers using machinery to dig, bore, and trench for underground work, and in bucket trucks or on electric poles for overhead work.
