Use of Force
Our use of force policy is merely a part of the continuum that directs and guides our police officers in using any type of force. Our training, our practices, our supervision, the caliber and character of the people we select to be police officers, our culture and indeed our policing philosophy, all serve to ensure our police officers understand when and how force should be utilized. And beyond that and perhaps more importantly, our police officers are well versed and practiced in interpersonal communication skills and sophisticated de-escalation techniques.Longmont Police Services views our community as our extended family. We take our role as public servants seriously and partner with the community to ensure our residents are treated with respect and dignity. 2020 Use of Force Policy
Longmont Police Officers wear cameras and have them turned on at every call for service. Longmont officers see the cameras as a positive part of their jobs. Cameras work to protect the public as well as protect officers from false allegations.
Citizen Review PanelThe City of Longmont utilizes an internal investigations process of police employees (both sworn and civilian) and their conduct to maintain integrity of the police department, protect citizens from employee misconduct, and protect police employees from false or malicious allegations. This citizen review panel aligns with the police department motto of “Policing in Partnership with the People,” and has been in place since 2000.
Longmont Police Services believes this citizen review panel is an excellent reflection of our motto.
The review panel:
- Includes 5 citizens, each of whom is a qualified elector of the city who serves without compensation.
- Citizen appointees shall have no felony convictions, have no misdemeanor conviction within five years of the date of their appointment, have no current employment with any law enforcement agency, have no immediate family member who is a police department employee, and be willing to make a five-year commitment to the panel which may meet on a weekly basis.
