Summers in Longmont are getting hotter. Luckily, there is a lot you can do to keep cool, safe, and comfortable. Protect yourself, your loved ones, neighbors, pets, and community by staying informed and prepared for extreme heat.
Heat Impacts Everyone
Summer heat can have serious impacts. Some people are more at risk than others, so it’s important to know what to do when it gets hot.
What is the City Doing to Keep Longmont Cool?
We’ve been busy talking with the community about how we can help everyone be safe and comfortable. Here’s what we’ve accomplished so far:
-
- Developed a Climate Risk Mapping Tool
- Completed a Heat Watch urban heat island mapping project
- Received over 800 responses to a bilingual city-wide survey of resident’s experiences with summer heat.
- Conducted nearly two dozen phone interviews with vulnerable residents.
- Documented Osvaldo’s, José’s, Colette’s, and John’s experiences with heat.
- Collaborated with community organizations to provide bilingual heat information door-to-door in vulnerable neighborhoods
- Hosted bilingual cooling solution workshops, attended neighborhood events to distribute cooling kits, and presented to community groups
- Exhibited an interactive heat information and cooling solutions display at the Longmont Senior Center
- Developed a comprehensive Heat Action Plan
- Met with Longmont Public Safety and attended heat-related emergency preparedness exercises
- Received grants to provide over 50 free window air conditioners and launch the Resilient Together: Neighborhood Cooling and Community Building project
- Launched the Keep Cool, Longmont outreach campaign
- Helped event attendees stay cool (literally) and learn about cooling solutions at an interactive “cooling tent”
- Collaborated with Boulder County and the PLAY Boulder Tree Trust to establish the Growing Shade tree planting project
- Leveraged Art in Public Places funding to install a custom “Cool Stop” bus stop
- And much more to come!
